44 Timelapse

I took this photo of the sunset and barg headed down the Mississippi while I was making a timelapse of nearly the same scene. The barges in the Mississippi travel much faster downstream than they do headed upriver. This barg was not long in the timelapse, but the color of the sky and the dramatic sunset makes the experience.

I try to determine if the sunset will be phenomenal from my home. Often I miss my mark and around sunset I look west and see that I should have planned to be making a timelapse. The spots I like by the Mississippi are at the Tennessee Arkansas bridge looking south, at the fourth bluff looking at the Hernando DeSoto bridge, under the Hernando DeSoto bridge and here, at the Greenbelt park.

I believe that the Mississippi makes a better timelapse if you get pretty far from the surface. The constant movement and waves are stronger the closer you are and you get less reflection. I have found it is noticeable even when you are far from the surface, but it can have a really great effect. Of course, it is never a placid lake like reflection, so you don't get that at all.

One thing about the timelapse is how well it can work with a legacy lens. Rather than opening and closing the aperture or keeping auto focus off, the legacy lens provides these two features to any timelapse. On the other hand, an uncoated lens may have some real problems pointed directly at the sun.

So the Mississippi River is not my only timelapse subject. I have also made timelapse sunsets of the carnival at the old fairgrounds, the fountain at the Liberty Bowl and a lake outside of Nashville. I also have some fun timelapes of driving around Arkansas, building a shed and odds and ends. I have done some sunrise timelapses also. I made one recently at the Tom Lee statute, the doughboy statute in Overton Park, before the MS Bike ride and at the Liberty Bowl. My favorite is sunrise over the Rocky Mountains in Estes Park.
