33 The Georgetown Loop Railway

Built in 1884 the three-foot narrow-gauge railroad was the pride of railroad engineers at its time. Now it is a Colorado attraction along US I70. Georgetown is a beautiful little city in the mountains and was the "Silver Queen of Colorado."

The Union Pacific engineer, Jacob Blickensderfer created the plan to navigate the steep, narrow canyon up from Georgetown. His plan used sharp turns to lessen the grade up to Silver Plume and the track loops over itself in the narrow canyon and crosses the creek a couple of times.

This photo shows the train from the passenger car I was on. When I saw the photo, I noticed the subject did not stand out from the background. The pines and mountainside made a very busy backdrop for the train. So I attempted to make the photo a blank-and-white, to give it a more 1880s look and feel. However, that did not help the train to stand out.

I made a significant edit by cutting the train out of the color version and pasting it right on top of the black-and-white version. So there is a color train and a gray background. Now this process is pretty simple in Adobe Lightroom, but I loved the edit at the time.

I took this photo with my SONY CDMavica and edited it with Microsoft Image Maker.
