Elk

The sign of the Fat Cat Cafe21 Elk

This photo is from Estes Park, at the entrance of the Rocky Mountain National Park.

I remember the stretch of road where these Elk are. Judy and I used to drive from Boulder to early in the morning, over the Continental Divide for breakfast at the Fat Cat in Grand Lake.

We would get to the gate at RMNP so early that there was no one at the East entrance of the park. On our way home we would explain that we were just going home at the West Gate and we would have a day in the mountains.

Actually it was perfectly legal, Judy and I had a park membership. It really was a great way to spend a Sunday morning and I cannot tell you how good brunch is at the Fat Cat.

The photo was made with my SONY R1. I cannot help but look at this photo and see all the ways I could make it better. But I also think about just who I was and what I was doing. I think someone could make a great photo here, but I was rushing to get over the divide and I did not use a tripod, I didn't have a place to show the photo.

The reason it is one of my favorite photos is not the Elk, but it is the memory of riding with Judy to the Fat Cat.
