25 Yellow church

This photo is from another drive in the Rocky Mountains. This one was taken near Pinecliff south of the Rocky Mountains National Park.

My friend Ian moved to a home near here when he moved to Boulder. Ian now lives in Steamboat Springs, but this photo was made a couple of years before Ian lived up there.

As far as a photo goes, I finally found something to stick in the foreground of one of my landscape pictures.

When I was on my second transcontinental bike ride, I had a small point-and-shoot film camera. I sent the film off to be developed with my parents as the return address. I took shots at the many vistas on my trip, but the typical foreground object was my bike.

The photos were lousy and my parents tried to explain why. The subjects were too far away, the bike was tiny and featureless, the horizon was indistinct and the sky was the massive bulk of the photo.

It was clear to me when I saw the photos that there was a real disconnect between the vast, colorful and expansive vista that I was seeing, and the dull photos that I made. It was hard to explain just how much is not in the photos that I made of that trip.

My photo education began with a huge failure that I would continue in my life in Alaska and Colorado. Now I wish I had some of those vistas, in their authentic detail in photos. But I have found that the photo is just an extension of your memory in many cases.

This photo was made with my SONY R1.
