10 Mississippi River Park

Judy and I had a wonderful picnic and I took this photo lying on the table. I didn’t use a filter but I did use the internal High Dynamic Range (HDR) setting on my Sony 7r. The internal HDR takes 3 to 5 photos in a series. In the camera it will combine the detail from the overexposed shot with the richness of the underexposed end of the range.

I love this photo and I think the in-camera HDR did great. Typically, I don’t find the HDR setting does a good job and I have learned to create much better photos combining them in Lightroom. The difficult part to get right is the “backlit” subject, the HDR helps to bring out detail on the branches and leaves of the tree. Because I am pointing the camera at the sun, it is hard to keep the foreground from being a silhouette. 

It is also hard to keep the rich color from the sky and clouds.  It was a beautiful day and I feel that looking again at this photo. I also made a timelapse of the sky and river from this same picnic table. I cannot help but realize that I have to tell you about the day to explain the whole feeling that I had.  There is no solid evidence that this photo is from the Mississippi River Park or that there is a beautiful view of the river. You cannot tell that I am on a picnic or that Judy is with me. I suppose the photo is what it is to you, the green trees and bright sun. I believe that is the scene that this photo can express to you even without you knowing where it was taken or what is beyond the frame.
